Have you visited the Library this Semester? If you have and are a returning student, you’ll have noticed that the buildings are operating in an unfamiliar way

With social distancing and safe working considerations in place, the buildings may look a little different than you remember and we have introduced new services to help you access the spaces and resources you need. However, there's no need to worry! Here's everything you need to know about using the Library safely...

The Philip Robinson LibraryWalton Library and Marjorie Robinson Library Rooms are open for individual study, to borrow resources via our Click and Collect service, and to return them safely when you are done.

But what do you need to know if you want to visit the Library to study, collect resources and use the physical spaces? Here are a few important things you need to know about using the physical space:

1. You need to book in advance

You won’t be able to enter the Library to study or collect your Click and Collect items unless you’ve already pre-booked a slot. Find out more about how to book a study space

Remember to have your booking confirmation ready when you come to the Library as staff will need to check it.

2. You must check in to your study space

There’s a QR code on each desk and you can use this (or the link provided) to check in to your space. This is essential as, if you don’t check in, your booking will lapse after 20 minutes and someone else could book that space.

3. Stay at your pre-booked space

If you swap around you could end up sitting in someone else’s space. If you’re not sure where to find your space, just ask a member of staff at the Library Help Desk who can help direct you.

4. Library spaces are for individual study

However, there are other bookable, social and study spaces available on campus – check the Newcastle University App or go to Roomfinder.

5. Clean your space before and after you use it

Cleaning materials are provided in all the Library buildings so you can wipe down your desk/PC.

6. Stay as long as you need to...

You can make a booking for as little as 15 minutes and up to 6 hours per day

7. ...but remember to check out when you've finished

Especially if you leave earlier than you intended. This will free up the space to be booked by someone else.

8. Book the space that suits your needs

The booking system includes a variety individual study spaces across the three Library buildings so if you need access to campus software or to print materials, book a space with a PC.

9. Use our Click and Collect service to borrow books

We’ve temporarily suspended browsing the shelves for the time being. However you can search and browse for items online via Library Search, and request any items to pick up at a time convenient to you.

10. Returns are contactless

You can return items at our self return kiosks in the foyer of the Philip Robinson Library, at the entrance of the Marjorie Robinson Library Rooms and in the Walton Library. When the Library is closed, you can use the letter box at the Philip Robinson Library to return items.
