Are you ready for the summer? Here are some ideas to make the most of it!

Summer break is one of the most anticipated holidays for students. After a long academic year, it’s finally time to relax, recharge, and enjoy some well-deserved freedom. Whether it’s travelling, visiting family, heading to the beach, or simply sleeping in — summer is your time.
It’s also the perfect opportunity to do things that can boost your CV — and the best part is, you can do it all at your own pace.
Here’s a list of things I suggest you do to make the most out of your summer (lowkey, these are also the things I’m planning to do myself!). I hope this personal approach gives some inspiration to any student wondering what to do this summer.
1. Visit your family
Spend quality time with your loved ones. It’s the perfect moment to reconnect, especially if you've been away during the year.
I can’t wait to see my family again! I definitely had moments of homesickness during uni, but knowing I’m close to seeing them makes it all worth it.
2. Travel (if possible) and enjoy the outdoors
Explore a new city, go hiking, or simply enjoy nature. Outdoor activities are not only fun, they also help you disconnect and refresh your mind.
Now that it’s getting warmer, try out new outfits, visit the beach, go on a road trip, take long walks around the city, or have a picnic. Take advantage of the amazing summer weather to do things that aren’t so fun in colder months.
Personally, I’m really looking forward to a beach picnic — the fresh breeze, snacks, and the company of friends or family. I’m so excited!
3. Apply for part time jobs or internships for the summer or next academic year
Think about the skills you’d like to build or develop further based on your major or interests, then look for internships or part-time jobs that help you grow in those areas on the MyCareer webpage. You can even apply now for roles during the next academic year!
The Careers Service also provides online resources you can access anytime — from practising for interviews and recruitment tests to receiving personalised feedback on your CV and cover letter, all tailored to support your job applications and career development.
4. Update your CV
Along with applying to jobs or internships make sure your CV is up to date with any new experience, courses, or achievements.
I know it can feel like a chore, especially during the break, but trust me — future “you” will be so glad you did it now instead of rushing later.
One of the best places to start with is the Career Services webpage, where you can look for tips of how to write your CV and book appointments online and in person with CV Advisers over the summer.
5. Do volunteering!
Volunteering not only feels good — it also looks great on your CV. Whether it’s helping out locally or applying for international volunteering programmes, there are many ways to get involved.
Just explore what causes you're passionate about and find something that fits!

6. Hang out with friends
Don’t forget to enjoy your time! Socialising is just as important as working or studying — balance is key.
I want to spend this time to reconnect with my friends back home, to hang out with them and catch up about our lives.
7. Take a course (related or not to your degree)
Try something new or deepen your knowledge in a field you love. Think about courses that could help you in your future career - or simply something you enjoy.
I am planning to take a course in drawing to remind me of the foundations and continue my interest in it!
8. Learn a new language
It’s a challenge, but a fun and rewarding one. Even just the basics can open doors for travel, work, or future studies!
Right now, I’m taking Korean classes through the University Wide Language Programme, but to make sure I don’t forget what I’ve learned, I’ll continue reviewing and studying over the summer.
9. Work out or be active
Whether it’s joining a gym, going for daily walks, or taking up a new sport — moving your body will make you feel better mentally and physically.
There’s places where you can practise a sport freely with more people interested! For example, LTA Barclays offers free Sunday tennis sessions for all levels (beginner to advanced) at Leazes Park from 10:00 to 11:00 am — perfect if you're around!
10. Read books
Whether for fun or self-development, reading is a great way to stay sharp during the break.
I’ve already started a summer reading list! My goal is to read more than I did last year, mixing fantasy and romance books with ones related to my major.
You can check out the Libby app, which gives students free access to e-books, audiobooks and magazines!
So what are you waiting for? This summer is yours — to rest, to grow, and to enjoy. Let’s make it unforgettable!
