Our Careers Support for International Students

Whether you are in your first year, mid-way through your studies or due to graduate soon, don’t forget that the Careers Service is here to support every step of your career journey, both during your studies and up to three years after graduation.

Supporting you during your studies

International students can access our International Student Pathway which covers all the information you need to know about boosting your skills, preparing applications and finding opportunities. You can work through this programme at your own pace, accessing the information when it’s relevant for you. You can also access answers to questions you might have on our tailored International Student support pages

We offer practical support to help with your plans to gain experience. Our NCL Internships are designed for you to get meaningful part-time project experience while you study.

Working during your studies

If you’re thinking of applying for a part-time job while you study, you can come along to one of our workshops – we offer sessions at the start of Semester One designed specifically for international students. This includes any working hour restrictions you may have. We’ll talk you through the process and give you all the information you need to start finding and applying for opportunities in the UK. You can also sign up for on-campus work through our Jobs on Campus programme.

Supporting your graduate job search

During your studies, in addition to employer activities in your School, you will have access to meet employers at our Graduate Recruitment Fair. We have a range of resources to support your search for graduate employment in the UK, including MyCareer which lists opportunities from employers interested in recruiting our graduates. You can also benefit from our subscription to Student Circus which only advertises opportunities from employers willing to sponsor through the skilled worker visa route. 

Visa advice

Understanding your visa options for working in the UK after your studies can feel like a challenge. We’ve teamed up with our Visa Team experts to offer monthly workshops, clearly explaining the process for you. 

Working outside the UK

If you’re not thinking of staying in the UK when you finish your studies, we can also help with returning home, or finding and applying for jobs anywhere else. You can access our subscription to GoinGlobal which has over 16 million vacancy listings across the world. Any students interested in working in China, or understanding the UK job market from a Chinese perspective, can benefit from our China Career Gateway programme and our partnerships with the leading graduate recruitment service, LockinChina.

Thinking of starting your own business or continuing your studies?

We have dedicated resources and events to support you if you’re interested in working for yourself, or starting up a business. Your student visa restricts your ability to be self-employed in the UK while studying, however we have a range of support, activities and funding to help you get ready to start-up when you finish your studies. Alternatively, if you’re thinking of continuing your studies, at Newcastle or elsewhere, we can help with finding and applying for courses. 

Whatever point you’re at on your course and wherever your career interests lie, our website is likely to have the answers you’re looking for. For anything else you need support with, you can sign up to workshops and book 1:1 appointments with us to discuss your individual needs.
