The Magic Hat Café is one of Newcastle’s best hidden gems. Located on Higham Place, right in the city centre, the café is the perfect place for an affordable lunch or brunch. Over the weekend, the Magic Hat functions on a pay-as-you-feel basis, meaning you can enjoy a meal out with friends whilst remaining within a budget that suits you.
What’s even better, is that this unique spot creates meals from surplus food collected across the city from other businesses and donations. They prevent food waste by turning excess ingredients, otherwise destined for landfill, into meals that can feed hundreds of people. This means that not only do they offer delicious food, but they’re also doing incredible environmental work as well!
The Magic Hat’s menu changes daily, based on whatever ingredients they receive, so you’ll always be surprised with something new and exciting. The café also always offers creative vegan and vegetarian options, catering to everyone. On our visit, we chose a Celeriac Shawarma and Baked Beef Meatballs - both got high ratings!
There is also a pay-as-you-feel market stall outside of the café, with various fresh produce such as fruit and vegetables and baked goods that you can take home with you.
If you’re looking for amazing yet affordable food and a nice atmosphere, the Magic Hat Café is a must in Newcastle!
