Beach Days and Surf Vibes

Summer is the perfect excuse to head to the coast and enjoy the fresh sea breeze with your friends. Whether you're planning a chill picnic by the beach or looking to catch some waves, Tynemouth Beach is a go-to spot just a short Metro ride from the city. It’s a favourite for both relaxing and surfing, with surf schools available for beginners too in Tynemouth Surf Co.

You can also check out King Edward’s Bay which offering stunning views and space to unwind. Pack some snacks, grab your sunnies, and don’t forget a towel, beach days are calling!

Baking and Cooking Summer Treats

When the days get longer and the weather warms up, it’s a great excuse to try out some fun, seasonal recipes in the kitchen. Think homemade Japanese strawberry shortcake, lemon drizzle loaf, or even no-bake cheesecake jars for those hotter days when you want something sweet without turning on the oven.

You could also get friends together for a DIY taco night, make refreshing fruit popsicles, or try your hand at watermelon feta skewers, a surprisingly delicious combo! Whether you're a baking pro or just experimenting for fun, summer cooking is all about light, fresh flavours and sharing good food with people you love.

Upgrade your Clothes

As the season changes, it’s the perfect moment to give your wardrobe a little summer upgrade, without breaking the bank or harming the planet. Start by going through your clothes and donating any pre-loved pieces to local charity shops around Newcastle, like those on Marie Curie or St Oswald Hospice Gosforth. Not only does it clear space, but it also supports great causes.

Or if you want something new-to-you in return, you should try a clothes swap event like in Previously Loved because they’re fun, free, and full of hidden gems! You can donate and swap up to 15 preloved clothes and accessories there. It’s a great way to refresh your style, stay sustainable, and maybe even pick up something unique you wouldn't find in stores.

Explore Hidden Gems in the North East

If you’re craving a mini summer escape without going too far, the North East is full of underrated gems just waiting to be explored. Take a peaceful day trip to Craster, a charming coastal village with dramatic cliffs, fresh sea air, and the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle overlooking the sea. Or hike through Allen Banks and Staward Gorge, a National Trust woodland spot that looks straight out of a fairy tale, especially beautiful in the golden summer light. For something truly breathtaking, head to Low Force Waterfall in Teesdale or catch the sunset at Bamburgh Beach, with its iconic castle backdrop. Pack some snacks, bring your camera, and let summer adventure lead the way.

Ice Cream Hopping with Friends

What’s summer without ice cream? Instead of sticking to just one spot, why not make a day of it and go ice cream hopping with your friends around Newcastle and beyond! Start with a classic scoop from Di Meo’s in Whitley Bay, known for their award-winning gelato right by the sea. Then head into town for creative flavours at Creams Cafe in Grainger Street. If you're up for a coastal adventure, don’t miss Ciccarelli near South Shields or a seaside cone from Riley’s Fish Shack. It’s a sweet way to explore new places, catch up with your mates, and cool down while making the most of the sunshine.
