If you prefer studying outside of your room, the library or just fancy a change of scenery to study, here are some of Callum and Mia's favourite independent cafés where they love to work.

Callum: Pink Lane Coffee, City Centre/Jesmond/Sandyford

Pink Lane Bakery, Jesmond/City Centre

With multiple locations around Newcastle, Pink Lane is a favourite among both locals and students. The best thing about this artisan café has got to be their home crafted baked goods and sweet treats. From everything to sourdough loaves to delicate pastries to yummy sandwiches; Pink Lane will have something to satisfy your appetite while completing your university assignments. The atmosphere is very cosy with wooden furnishings and friendly faces serving your food and drinks. An honourable mention goes to their signature hot chocolate with marshmallows, as no matter the season it will always help me through my study session. I know I will certainly be locking in here during the exam period.

Mia: Central Bean, City Centre

Central Bean, City Centre

This coffee shop is the perfect location in the city centre, not far from the Business School and main campus. I love the relaxed atmosphere in there and their delicious coffee!

With plenty of tables great for both group study sessions or independent ones, it is one of my go-to spots, especially between lectures. The vibe in the café is really nice, the staff are lovely, and you will quite often find other students or people with work meetings being in there. The lighting is soft, making it easier to work without feeling like you are under those harsh bright lights. It is the kind of café that you can sit in for a good few hours and get plenty of work done.

A caramel iced latte is my go-to drink here and Central Bean also has reward cards, so after 9 coffees you get your 10th for free!

Callum: Olive and Bean, City Centre

Olive and Bean, City Centre

Located on Clayton Street, this café offers a lovely atmosphere away from the busy study spots on campus. I find it to be ideal if you are out in town having just run errands and feeling that you should be doing your university work. Olive and Bean is a bistro, café and bakery all in one making it the perfect place to study no matter how hungry you are, with all their food made freshly in house. Trust me, nothing feels better than treating yourself to a full English Breakfast to fuel yourself for a committed study session. With spacious tables, it makes this café the perfect place for both a lunch and study date.

Mia: Café 1901, Jesmond

Cafe 1901, Jesmond

This spot is a classic Jesmond favourite amongst students and locals. It is in Jesmond village and serves delicious food, cakes and coffees!

The café has plenty of tables with a mix of solo and group visitors, creating a nice sense of community. With comfortable seating and a relaxed environment, it makes the perfect study spot. Café 1901 provides a productive study area as you will often find other students working in there!

Callum: Neighbourhood, Haymarket

Neighbourhood, Haymarket

Having just recently opened a stone’s throw away from the Philip Robinson Library, it is no surprise that Neighbourhood has already become a bustling staple for students. This means that Neighbourhood can be the perfect break of scenery to study from the University Library. Alongside regular tables and chairs, this café uniquely offers tiered seating where you and your friends can lounge about and complete your work in a more relaxed manner. Another nifty feature about this café is that it has its own matcha on draught, which I can confirm is delightful! Alongside exceptional coffee, you can enjoy light bites and various pastries, with their cinnamon swirl being especially delicious.

Mia: Flower Café Jesmond

Flower Café is new to Jesmond this year but has already become a student favourite for study sessions!

I enjoy going to Flower Café with my housemates on a group study session as there are plenty of large tables for us all to fit around.

My go-to drink here is a strawberry iced matcha or a caramel iced latte and even better, they do half and half cups if you can't decide between the two! The staff are friendly, the service is great and students can even get £2 coffees on Tuesdays, which makes study sessions that little bit better!

Whether you’re after a quiet corner, great coffee, or a cosy space to stay focused, these cafés offer the ideal study spots to stay productive and inspired.
