Registering with a doctor (or General Practitioner as it is known in the UK), is vital as it will enable you to access any health care treatment or prevention you may need while studying at university.
This year, if you are living in the Newcastle or Gateshead area you can register with a doctor via our dedicated online platform.
If you will be living outside of the Newcastle or Gateshead area you can choose a doctor directly from the National Health Service (NHS) list.
Our aim is to assist you in identifying the most appropriate Doctor's practice in an impartial and unbiased manner.
Firstly, you need to decide if you would prefer a practice close to the University campus or close to your accommodation. Secondly, you may wish to consider what you would like the Doctor’s practice to offer, such as home visits, gender specific practitioners, specialised clinics, etc.
If you are living in University accommodation or find yourself on campus and become ill or injured outside of normal medical practice hours, there are a number of different ways you can be helped.
If you are off campus or are living in private accommodation and become ill or injured, you will need to contact the emergency services on 999 and follow the operator’s instructions.
Please remember that hospital Accident and Emergency departments should only be used in the case of a medical emergency.
If you are an International Student you may find this information from Involve North East useful for learning about how the NHS works and which Health Services are available.
You should also register with a dental practice when you come to Newcastle University. There are many NHS dental practices in Newcastle, the names and addresses of which are available from the NHS website.
For any dental emergencies, you should visit the Newcastle Dental Hospital on Richardson Road (behind the Royal Victoria Infirmary, which is adjacent to the University).
