Final year BA Music student directs Edinburgh’s first professional Symphony Orchestra in ninety years.

Twenty-year-old Luis Schmidt is Director of Music and Chairman of Capella Edina; a group which has just been named Edinburgh’s official symphony orchestra by the Lord Provost of the city, Councillor Robert Aldridge.

Luis is one of the youngest directors of music of any professional symphony orchestra. Throughout his work, he showcases his dedication to making classical music more accessible to a wider audience and presenting lesser well-known works in unique concert programmes.

About Capella Edina

Capella Edina is a group of highly talented musicians, from long-standing freelance professionals to recent graduates, who meet for specific concerts and recording projects. They embrace a broad repertoire that enables it to reach the most diverse audience. The group is committed to making classical music more accessible, for which it is rolling out an educational programme for its 2025 season.

Director of Music, Luis Schmidt began his musical career by learning the trumpet at the Klenze-Gymnasium, a grammar school in Munich, Germany, at the age of 10. Aged 15, Luis started conducting and established his own brass ensemble, which he quickly expanded to a wind band and thereafter a chamber orchestra. He then went on to study conducting with worldwide renowned conductor and Haydn researcher Bruno Weil. Two years ago, he began his time here at Newcastle University on a Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship.

Capella Edina’s 2025 inaugural season will begin with a concert in Edinburgh’s Usher Hall on Thursday 16 January; tickets are now available.
