Studying Remotely

If you have travelled home and are studying remotely for the final teaching weeks, make the most of the online Library.

You can access e-books, e-journals, conference papers and specialist information resources such as market research, standards, newspapers, and maps, wherever you are working. Begin on Library Search to ensure you are logged in correctly and recognised as a student at Newcastle University.

Searching with topic keywords will allow you to access e-book titles and articles from across Library databases, while searching for the name of a resource such as Mintel, Medline, Reaxys or Box of Broadcasts will link you through to the database and prompt you to log in with Single Sign On.

When you are working on campus, you may be automatically recognised as a member of the University because of your location. When you’re working remotely, this won’t be the case and if you miss out the step of going through Library Search, you may find that you are unable to search or are prompted to pay for access to full-text articles.

If you are on the website of a journal or a database, the quickest way to check if you are logged in, is to look around the screen to see if you can spot the University logo or name. This is often at the top of the screen or below the search boxes on the homepage of a database or journal/ e-book platform. If you can’t see the University details anywhere, head back to Library Search to access the authenticated link.

You can also search for individual resources you want to use on the Library website and find suggested specialist resources for your discipline on your Subject Guide.

We’ve put together some troubleshooting videos to help you access the most popular database platforms.

If you have any trouble accessing resources remotely or want a bit of help with trying something new, get in touch with us on Library Help
