Meet Chris
Hey, I’m Chris, a first year MBBS Medical Student here at Newcastle University. I am a local to Newcastle, originally being from South Northumberland and so I am very familiar with the city.
I am a sporty person, and a lot of my time is dedicated to playing basketball for the University BUCS 2nd team, but outside of sport and my studies I just like to spend time with my friends and relax.
I am foodie at heart, and so my top recommendation for things to do in Newcastle is to try all the different cuisines the city has to offer!
Here are some of my personal favourites, all from local businesses:
Proven Goods- These guys make some of the best donuts in the business, with seasonal flavours and the classics like my favourite: the homer.
Gwarn Jerk- An authentic Caribbean cuisine with some of the best chicken and mutton I’ve ever had!
40 Ounce- If you ever find yourself in Gateshead or shopping in Team Valley, this is a must! With their unique style of cooking their burgers, they are guaranteed to be one of the most mouth-watering you’ve ever had. It's worth the hype.
Meet Leyla
Hello! I’m Leyla, a stage 3 English Literature with Creative Writing student and one of the content creators! Originally, I am from Pakistan and Uruguay, but I grew up in Zimbabwe so it was all new and adventurous when I first moved to the UK for university.
Before I arrived to Newcastle, I was really excited about all the activities, clubs and societies the university had to offer. I enjoy the arts and crafts events for £1 that the Students' Union run on a weekly basis and the sporting societies like Ultimate Frisbee with their competitive opportunities.
Additionally, I love Newcastle as a city itself with its wide array of cafes but my favourite spot is definitely Iris Brickfield Park in Heaton because it is peaceful.
Meet Ollie
My name is Ollie and I’m a second year music student from Newcastle. I’m into Queen (the band), cold water dipping (especially in the north sea), musical theatre and coffee!
In my free time, I help to run an LGBT collective in Newcastle (Canny Queer Collective), where we host events and meet-ups for LGBT people. And, of course, I enjoy creating social media content - I love to share daily vlogs, plus content about Newcastle, student life, autism and other topics via my vlogs (@innuendos on TikTok).
The best thing about studying at Newcastle is that I get to stay in my home city too, I love it too much to move away! Plus, the gorgeous campus is a bonus.
My Newcastle recommendation for a meal out would be Zucchini Pasta Bar on Pilgrim Street - SO delicious!
Meet Layal
Hi! My name is Layal, a first year Accounting & Finance student at Newcastle University Business School. I love to explore my passions and creativity through many different outlets, one of which led me to being a student content creator here at Newcastle University.
As an international student from Bahrain, what drew me most to the university is the balance between academic life and extracurricular activities- which are available all around the city and the university campus on a daily basis.
The city itself is so student friendly which makes it easier to navigate life as a university student, whether someone is a first, second or even a third year. The things to do in Newcastle are endless, as I have seen so many events which cater to different preferences and cultures; there is something for everyone.
Personally, I love to go visit Jesmond Dene and enjoy the amazing views and scenery that the park has to offer!
Meet Vladislava
Hi! My name is Vladislava and I am from the Czech Republic. I am currently in my second year of studying International Business Management with German, which I enjoy immensely!
I am a passionate lover of sports (any kind), books and cafes.
As a student at Newcastle University, I am surrounded by like-minded people, which makes my experiences here unforgettable. Chilling in the Courtyard in the Old Library Building or engaging in the discussions during the seminars bring me joy every day I spend here.
My top recommendation for where to get delicious (and cheap!) food is the Grainger Market. This place will always be at the top of my list!
Meet Allison
Hi! My name is Allison and I am from The Cayman Islands, a group of islands located 7500km away in the middle of the Caribbean Sea! I am currently a second-stage Marketing and Management BSc student here at Newcastle University!
When I’m not studying, you can find me in the water, whether that be snorkeling, fishing, boating, or riding jet skis. I really enjoy listening to music, (fun fact- Drake was my #1 on this year’s Spotify Wrapped!) and finding new artists as well as spending the majority of my time in cinemas catching a new film.
Calling Newcastle my new home wasn’t an easy task, but the tight-knit feeling of the city and its people made the process a lot easier. One aspect that truly resonates with me as a student here is the versatility inherent in my academic program. The diverse range of modules at my disposal consistently introduces fresh perspectives and knowledge, thereby affording me the intellectual flexibility to contemplate and explore various facets of the workforce.
My favourite spot in the toon would have to be the Quayside- whether that be during the Sunday markets, during a night out when the millennium bridge is lit up, or on a solo stroll alongside it with your headphones on- feeling like the main character.
