The shift from living on an island with no uni at all to attending a Russell Group university in a city as bustling and cultural as Newcastle has been challenging, but I couldn’t have picked a more welcoming place to move to - I’ve met so many people and I already see myself living here after I graduate!
Outside of my studies, I’m really passionate about comedy and music - my favourite thing about being a student here is the thriving arts scene in the North East.
That brings me onto my three favourite places in Newcastle:
I am originally from a rural village about an hour from Belfast, Northern Ireland. Moving over to Newcastle, for university, has undoubtedly been the best decision that I have ever made, even if I must take a plane to get home!
Although I love the diversity of my degree, my university experience has been shaped been getting involved in extra-curricular activities. Coming to university, I have found it is the perfect place where I can continue my current interests, while still developing new ones. From theatre society to student media to Gaelic football, I have been so fortunate to become a part of close-knit communities on campus. Joining clubs and societies should be a must for everyone!
Beyond the university itself, the city of Newcastle has so much to offer. My favourite part about Newcastle is the local creatives scene. There is always a local theatre production, art exhibition or music gig taking place. Events like these are the best way to capture a true taste of what makes Newcastle unique. When in Newcastle, make sure you take a trip to the either the Laing Art Gallery, or Northern Stage, to support North East creatives!
I love studying in my home city as it’s such a fun place with a strong sense of community, but I also love that university gives me the chance to meet people from so many different places.
From European city breaks to the Great Wall of China, I have a huge passion for travel. My favourite destination is Chiang Mai in Thailand, I love the food, scenery, culture and the friendliness of the locals. I can’t wait to go back once I have graduated.
I’m a huge foodie and I’m always on the hunt for hidden gems around town. I love a cheeky breakfast bao bun from Pablo-Eggs-Go-Bao on a Sunday morning. Since moving to Jesmond for uni, I’ve really enjoyed home cooking and trying out new recipes, like gyros and a Nando’s fakeaway.
When I’m not buried in assignments, you’ll probably find me off on an adventure, exploring new cultures, and meeting people from all over the world! I love turning my adventures into creative content for my Instagram page @gurleen.journals, where I share travel stories, hidden gems, and snippets of my life abroad.
What I love most about being a Newcastle University student (besides the amazing community and endless coffee spots) is how easy it is to hop on a train and take spontaneous day trips to stunning cities like Edinburgh, Durham, and York. It’s the perfect balance between studying hard and living your best travel life!
If you’re ever in Newcastle, my top recommendation is the Quayside. Whether it’s for a sunset stroll, snapping aesthetic photos, or checking out the Sunday market, it’s the ultimate spot to soak up the city vibes.
This is my fourth year living in Newcastle and I’m excited to share my experiences with you all this year!
I am from Formby, a town 30 minutes outside Liverpool which has gorgeous pinewoods and beach right at our front door. I’m studying Marketing and Management with placement and I’m now in final year of my studies.
Outside of my studies I enjoy spending time with my friends and exploring Newcastle, the wider region, and new food spots. I also enjoy all things shopping, fashion and reading new books.
After four years living in Newcastle (time has truly flown - can I call myself a Geordie yet?) the best part about being a Newcastle University student is the people, community and the friendships made. Without the University I would not have met some of my closest friends. The people and community are so friendly here it has been easy to settle in and call this city my second home.
There are so many amazing recommendations for Newcastle, one of my favourites has to be Grainger Market, from the fruit and veg shops to all the local food vendors, there is something for everyone! Uno's Trattoria on the Quayside is my ultimate favourite, a must try whilst you are here.
I love running, especially in the morning — I’m definitely a morning person. Running along the Tyne River with the fresh air always gives me energy for the day. After a long day, I enjoy good food and a glass of wine to relax.
What I like most about being a Newcastle University student is the great learning environment and strong support from the university. The professors are very knowledgeable and always explain things clearly. I often ask questions during lectures or by email, and they always answer patiently, which makes me feel truly supported as an international student.
The University also offers many helpful opportunities, from English lessons and internships to mental health support. Even far from home, I always feel I belong here.
If you visit Newcastle, I highly recommend the Quayside. You can take a peaceful morning walk with coffee or enjoy a glass of wine while watching the river at night — both are wonderful ways to feel the charm of this city.
