Volunteering abroad could be one of the most valuable experiences of your life.

Looking for a summer experience that will help you make unforgettable memories whilst also being part of a project that is helping improve the lives of many? Then EcoSwell is for you. EcoSwell is a charity focused on Sustainable development in regions of South America. Their work varies from helping provide medical electives to helping with water sanitation. This charity is incredibly valuable and needs volunteers like you to support its work!

This summer I travelled to a small town in Northern Peru called Lobitos to volunteer for EcoSwell as part of their research team. Lobitos, where the EcoSwell volunteer house is based is a small costal town, known for its surfing provided a calming and beautiful backdrop to my stay at EcoSwell.

Whilst living in the town I experienced many firsts, my first time surfing, my first time on a fishing trip where you catch your own lunch! Although the town may be small, the number of activities and experiences on offer are endless, from the beautiful sunsets to karaoke nights, it was hard to be bored. Working in such a small community allows volunteers to connect with the community around them. Being able to experience a way of life so different to what we have in the UK is truly remarkable and unique, allowing volunteers to truly understand the impact of the work they are involved with.

Whilst being a volunteer at EcoSwell there is a perfect mix of work and downtime. A typical day at EcoSwell looks like waking up for breakfast at 8:30, where you are provided with amazing local food for breakfast and lunch Monday- Friday, then start work around 9. The working day is normally relaxed with their being opportunities to take the 5 minute walk to the beach for a lunch time dip. The day usually finishes around 5, and after the working day there is opportunities to go out for dinner, chill at the beach or even go to a yoga class!

The staff and support provided is exceptional, you are guided and helped by the staff who know the local area to find the best activities, best places to eat and just given general support to help settle you into life at EcoSwell. Furthermore, you are guided with your volunteer work to make sure you never feel lost.

Being a volunteer at EcoSwell you get to live in a house with all the other volunteers, meaning you form great friendships with all types of people. Volunteering at EcoSwell was a truly special experience for me. From taking part in an important project that allows you to help make an impact on people’s lives, to being able to experience and live in a truly special community. I would recommend volunteering at EcoSwell to anyone who is thinking about it, it is a very special experience.
