Nandita joined the i-Lab pilot as Project Coordinator, which was the first programme to launch under the Rob Wood Enterprising Futures Academy, an initiative founded by Newcastle University graduate and entrepreneur Rob Wood.
At its core, i-Lab looked to nurture the enterprising and entrepreneurial spirit within our diverse student cohort. Providing a structured and interactive experience with the leading-edge of industry and practice and taking students on a journey beyond the curriculum.
My journey as a master's student in International Marketing at Newcastle University has been an incredible adventure, and my experience as the project coordinator for the i-Lab initiative was truly life-changing. Over 12 intense weeks, I had the chance to work with 20 amazing student interns from different backgrounds and disciplines. We were all so different, yet we came together with one goal—solve real-world business challenges while learning from one another. It wasn't just an academic exercise; it was a crash course in entrepreneurship, collaboration, and self-discovery.
The Entrepreneurial Spark
One of the best parts of the i-Lab experience was seeing how many of my peers were already on their own entrepreneurial journeys. It was inspiring to be surrounded by that energy and determination. It made me realise that entrepreneurship isn't just about having a great idea—it's about the mindset of embracing risk and believing that you can actually make your dream happen. Watching my peers go after their passions reminded me that the sky’s the limit if you're willing to take that leap.
Real-World Business Challenges
What made i-Lab stand out for me was how hands-on it was. Instead of just learning theory, we were guided toward solving real problems for actual businesses in the region. From understanding consumer behaviour to coming up with marketing strategies, we got to see how things really work in the business world. It wasn’t always smooth sailing—there were plenty of challenges—but that’s what made it so rewarding. Having the chance to work on these real-world projects gave me a level of practical experience that you just can't get from textbooks.
A New Kind of Confidence
One of the biggest turning points for me during the i-Lab was when I finally built up the courage to ask someone for a chat. It might sound small, but it was huge for me. That person turned out to be my now boss, who runs a start-up. After two conversations, I was offered my dream job! It all happened because I took a chance and asked for that meeting. And now, I’m living the life I always wanted. I couldn't have done it without the constant encouragement from my supervisors, who pushed me to go for it and believed in me when I doubted myself. Having that kind of support—both emotionally and professionally—made all the difference.
Guidance and Support
I was so lucky to have the most incredible supervisors throughout the programme. They were always there to challenge me in the best way possible, encouraging me to step outside my comfort zone and take risks. Their guidance wasn’t just about marketing or the projects we were working on—it was about pushing me to grow as a person. They were always checking in to make sure I had everything I needed, which gave me the confidence to keep pushing myself. I feel like I've grown so much, not just as a student but as a professional ready to take on the world.
Lasting Connections and Community
i-Lab wasn’t all work and no play. Some of my fellow students organised social events that really brought our group together, and those relationships have stuck with me. We still keep in touch, supporting each other as we all go on to different career paths. It’s amazing to have this community of people who were with me during such a formative time. It’s one of those things that you carry with you long after the programme ends.
The Dissertation Insight That Changed Everything
A standout moment for me was when one of my peers gave an interview that ended up being a key part of my dissertation. Their insight into marketing strategies opened my eyes to a new perspective that I hadn’t considered before, and it completely transformed my research. It just goes to show how much we can learn from each other when we're open to sharing and listening.
Looking back on my time at i-Lab, I’m filled with gratitude. The experience didn’t just help me grow professionally—it shaped the person I’ve become. The skills I developed, the relationships I formed, and the lessons I learned will stay with me as I move forward in my career. More than anything, it reinforced the power of courage and collaboration. With the right support, anything is possible.
