My Top Newcastle Running Routes

With the warmer weather here and the Great North Run coming up, check out Joe, a stage 2 student's top running routes around the city. They cover a range of difficulties and distances and you can download the mapped routes with the accompanying links.

Town Moor Loop - 4.7 km

20240722_090413000_iOSStarting out with one of my favourites! A big loop of the Town Moor and Exhibition Park. At just under 5km and very flat this route is ideal for everyone. I really like the variation of scenery on this route with a lap of the duck pond in the middle passing Wylam Brewery.

Allotments to Dene - 8.2km

Screenshot 2024-07-22 13363560An intermediate run with a few tough hills. This route starts at the top of Jesmond at the Little Moor' and loops back going via the Dene. This route is a good mix of different gradients and scenery from the open moor and allotments to the windy paths of Jesmond Dene and Armstrong Bridge. I always find it nice on a hot day as you're quite shaded from the sun in the Dene segment.

Seafront Dash - 5km

20240722_085433000_iOSThis is one of my favourite routes down the seafront. I highly recommend it if you are getting the metro out to the coast. The run starts at Monkseaton Metro Station and then ends at Longsands Beach in Tynemouth. I usually do this on a Saturday morning with friends, ending with a dip in the sea and a coffee in Tynemouth. We then get the metro home from Tynemouth Metro Station.

Quayside - 10km 20240722_090433000_iOS

This is a straightforward 1ok down the quayside and back. Starting at the Cycle Hub Cafe at the bottom of the Ouseburn Canal and running along the riverfront. The run is super flat and a great entry level 10k. It gives you great views along the river, passing all of the bridges which are great milestones.

Sandyford and Tyne - 5km

Screenshot 2024-07-22 135544This is another 5k route from the Heaton/Sandyford area and goes down to the river and over the Millennium Bridge, looping back on the red Swing Bridge. It starts downhill and ends with a gentle uphill gradient. It's not one of my own but it's a nice level of difficulty for anyone. Don't forget to save some energy for the uphill return!
