Neighbourhood Guide: Heaton

By Ollie, Student Content Creator

Are you struggling to find accommodation in Newcastle city centre? Finding that everywhere is too pricey? It might be time to consider looking a bit further out.

I’m Ollie, a music student born and raised in Newcastle, and I’m here to tell you a bit about the area where I live: Heaton!

What sort of accommodation is available?

Most property in Heaton is terraced housing, which is perfect if you are looking for somewhere to move in with friends. A varied range of people live in Heaton, from families to students and young professionals, so expect a more chilled atmosphere than you might experience in city centre accommodation.

What are the transport links like?

Chillingham Road Metro Station is only three stops away from Monument Station. It is also within Zone A, saving you money on tickets!

If you’d prefer to get the bus, various bus routes pass through Heaton (I recommend checking Google/Apple Maps or the CityMapper app for your best options). For example, the 62 and 63 along Chillingham Road head towards Monument. The number 1 from Chillingham and Heaton Road also stops near Haymarket.

How long does it take to walk to Haymarket?

From Heaton or Chillingham Road, you’ll be looking at around a 35-40 minute walk to Haymarket.

Are there good cycle routes towards Haymarket?

From Heaton or Chillingham Road, you can cycle to Haymarket in around 10-12 minutes. The cycle lane on Heaton Road has also recently been improved!

Is there parking available? Do I need a permit?

Many streets around the Heaton area are residential, and on-street parking is available. A few streets have parking restrictions, so it's wise to check whether you will need a permit.

Are there amenities nearby (i.e. supermarkets)?

On Heaton and Chillingham Road, there are two Sainsbury’s convenience stores and a Tesco convenience store. There are also plenty of corner shops, a post office, InPost lockers, and just about anything else you will need day-to-day within walking distance.

How about places to go out for food and drinks?

Chillingham Road seems to be the new hotspot for foodies! The street is full of various places to eat out, and new places are popping up constantly. For example, vegan sushi and bánh mi bar Veganatomy has recently opened - plus, Parm-O-Rama, a firm favourite with locals, is preparing to open its new location there soon. Or, if you fancy a coffee, why not pop into Neighbourhood Coffee or The Whale’s Head?

My top three recommendations for food spots on Heaton Road would be Smoke and Sear, Estate Tea Co and The Butterfly Cabinet. Plus, Sambuca in Heaton Park offers excellent three-course deals on Sunday dinners or Italian food, all for under £10.

Is there anything else unique about this area?

The Shoe Tree in Heaton Park

What I love about Heaton is that it is in that sweet spot between being close enough to town to commute there easily and far enough out that the atmosphere is more residential and peaceful. The wide range of food vendors means you are always spoiled for choice and can sample foods from various cultures. The gorgeous Heaton Park is also the perfect place for walking alone or with friends and unwinding in nature.

See if you can spot the Shoe Tree in Heaton Park!
