Here at Newcastle University, we have sports facilities available for everyone, whether you’d consider yourself a pro athlete or complete beginner.

We recently invested £30 million into refurbishing and improving our sports spaces, including a world-class gym due to open in February 2021.

Sport and Fitness Centre

Our brand new sports centre will be opening in February 2021. Until then, you’ll find a temporary gym in the Sports Hall North Wing, where you’ll still have access to all your favourite equipment.

The new sports centre has been designed with you in mind, and features training zones including, a large free weights area, a resistance zone, a functional training zone, and a performance cardio zone. Our state of the art equipment is all from Technogym, and the built-in programmes will allow you to personalise and tailor every workout to you.

Gym Work Outs (2)-1

Fitness staff are on hand to give you help and assistance, as well as to assess your fitness ability and create a personalised workout programme for you. If you’re new to the gym, you can book an induction, which includes a tour of the facilities and an introduction on how to use the equipment safely.

From Monday 28th September 2020, our Sport and Fitness Centre is open as follows:

Monday to Friday        07:00 – 22:00

Weekends                   09:00 – 21:00

Membership

For this academic year, we are offering an all-inclusive sport and fitness membership at just £75. With this membership, you’ll have access to the gym, exercise classes, casual booking slots, the Intramural and Sports Participation programme, and you’ll also be able to train and play for AU Sports Clubs. This membership will be valid until 30th September 2021, so you can fulfil all your exercise needs for the whole academic year! You can sign up for membership here

Sports Clubs

At Newcastle University we have over 60 Sports Clubs and more than 160 Societies for you to join, so there will definitely be something to interest you. Our clubs are run by students especially for students and they’re the perfect opportunity to continue with your favourite sport or to try something new.

Play it Safe

This year, things will be a little different in the Sports and Fitness Centre, so we’re asking you to Play it Safe and follow some simple guidelines in order to keep you and your friends safe, to keep the centre open and to help sports return to play quickly and safely:

  • Please follow Government, University, NGB, and Sports Centre Guidelines. These might change, but we will keep you updated
  • Book your sports sessions online or via the Sports Centre app. This is mandatory
  • Do not attend if you are experiencing symptoms of Covid-19 including, a new continuous cough, a raised temperature, or a change or loss of smell or taste. If you have symptoms, go home and stay home, and call the NHS Covid-19 service on 119 to book a test
  • Observe all signage
  • Clean equipment before and after use
  • Report any concerns to staff
We can’t wait to welcome you to our Sports and Fitness Centre this academic year! Visit our sports pages for more information of the facilities available to Newcastle University staff and students.
