Stop, Challenge, Protect - The Take Five Initiative

Written by Newcastle University | Mar 1, 2024 3:36:01 PM

In the fast-paced world of university life, safeguarding your finances is paramount.

That's where the Take Five initiative comes in – a national campaign aimed to help you keep your money safe. Let's break it down: Stop, Challenge, Protect.

Stop: Take a Moment to Pause

Before parting with your money or information, take a moment to stop and think. It's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle, but this simple pause could be your best defence against scams.

Challenge: Could it be Fake?

It's okay to question. Challenge any unexpected requests – reject, refuse, or ignore them. Legitimate entities won't rush or panic you. If something feels off, trust your instincts and take the time to verify.

Protect: Act Swiftly

If you suspect you've fallen for a scam, it's crucial to act swiftly. Contact your bank immediately to secure your accounts. Report the incident to Action Fraud to ensure that appropriate measures are taken against the criminals.

How to Incorporate Stop, Challenge, Protect into Your Routine

  1. Stop and Think:
  • Pause before responding to requests for money or information. Take that extra moment to assess the situation.
  1. Challenge Suspicious Requests:
  • If a request seems unexpected or off, challenge it. It's okay to reject, refuse, or ignore any communication that raises doubts.
  1. Protect Your Finances:
  • In the unfortunate event of falling victim to a scam, act swiftly. Contact your bank to secure your accounts and report the incident to Action Fraud.
