Quick thinking and teamwork from our University’s Security team led to the safe rescue of a family of ducklings near the Medical School.
You may be familiar with the family of ducks that wander around campus. Recently, Security Officer Wes O'Neill received a call at Security Control from a concerned colleague, who had been alerted that the ducklings had become trapped in a drain.
Responding promptly, Wes and fellow officer Spencer Cummings were dispatched to the scene, where the young birds were reported to be in distress.
While on their way, the officers spotted the mother duck nearby, clearly agitated as she searched for her missing ducklings. Upon reaching the location, Wes and Spencer carefully lifted each duckling from the drain and reunited them with their mother.
With the family safely back together, the officers went a step further by managing traffic to ensure the ducks could cross the road safely. The family was then guided to the sanctuary of Exhibition Park, bringing the rescue to a happy conclusion, much to the relief of colleagues in the area.
The incident highlights the dedication and care shown by our Security team, not just for people on campus, but for its wildlife too.
