Two postgraduate researchers from Newcastle University delivered the ‘New Voices on Science, Agriculture and Engineering’ Insights Public Lecture on Tuesday 18 March.

Nathan Smith from the School of Engineering and Charlotte Fletcher from the School of Natural & Environmental Sciences delivered a fascinating session, sharing their cutting-edge research with the public. The session was chaired by the Postgraduate Research Dean, Dr Phil Lord.

Nathan and Charlotte with Dr Phil LordNathan introduced his Digital Sailmate device, designed to improve the safety of artisanal fishing boats. This low-cost consumer-level digital technology (a Raspberry Pi) demonstrated remarkable accuracy in predicting stability loss, comparable to high-cost alternatives.

Charlotte then followed with her research on enzyme surface mobility kinetics of laundry detergents. Her study findings have the potential to improve detergents, leading to reduced energy consumption and water usage during laundry, benefiting both the environment and household bills.

The public audience was thoroughly impressed by both talks, engaging in a lively Q&A session at the end.

For those who missed the event, the talks are available for viewing at the Newcastle University Public Lectures Archive.

Congratulations to both Nathan and Charlotte for their outstanding contributions to scientific research and public engagement!
