Studying a science degree but not convinced a lab career is for you? Good news — there are loads of exciting science‑related jobs that don’t involve white coats, pipettes or fume hoods.

Come along to Science Careers Outside the Lab on Monday 9 March to chat with employers, hear real career stories, and explore what’s possible with your degree. It’s a friendly, informal event designed for curiosity. Some employers may be promoting live roles, but the main focus is on insight and conversation, without worrying about impressing anyone or feeling recruitment pressure.

Here’s how to make the most of it.

Before the Event

Do your research

Spend a few minutes looking up the organisations attending — even the ones you don’t recognise. Those are often the most interesting!

Try:

    • checking their websites
    • looking them up on LinkedIn
    • making a quick list of who you want to speak to first

Prepare questions

Talking to employers can feel easier when you have a few questions up your sleeve. Here are some ideas to get you started:

About the career

  • what does a typical day look like?
  • why did you apply for/what do you enjoy most about your role?
  • how did you get into this career after university?
  • which skills or qualities are most important in your position?
  • what challenges do you face in your job?
  • how has the field changed since you started?
  • what’s the workplace culture like?

About your fit

  • what could I do now to strengthen my chances of entering this field?
  • are there skills beyond my degree that would be useful?
  • what advice would you give to someone like me who is considering this career?

About resources, opportunities and next steps

  • are there relevant professional associations I should explore?
  • are there publications or resources you’d recommend?
  • does your organisation offer internships, shadowing, or project opportunities?
  • Is there anyone else you think I should talk to?

On the day

  • introduce yourself to exhibitors — smile, make eye contact, and be curious
  • bring a pen and notebook to record insights and names
  • ask for contact details or business cards from people you’d like to keep in touch with

After the event

Reflect

  • which organisations or roles stood out to you?
  • what skills or experiences might you want to develop next?

Follow up

It’s absolutely worth sending a short thank-you email to the employers you spoke to.
A quick message can:

    • strengthen your connection
    • help you access further information
    • even lead to work experience or future opportunities

You can also

  • add contacts on LinkedIn
  • follow organisations on social media
  • mention the event in future applications — it shows you’ve done your research and taken initiative
