Despite what ABBA may tell you, there’s a lot of things you can do without money - especially in Newcastle.
It’s easy to associate days out with big spending, but thankfully there’s plenty to enjoy here without spending a penny.
Whether you’re looking to fill some time between lectures, go on a scenic walk or spend a day by the beach with friends, here are some of the best things to do in Newcastle for free:
Jesmond Dene

If you’re after a scenic adventure or a peaceful escape, Jesmond Dene is the perfect spot. Just fifteen minutes from the South Gosforth metro (and right on your doorstep if you live in Jesmond!), Jesmond Dene is abundant in stunning natural beauty and scenery through its paths along the Ouseburn river.
With a range of paths covering a vast area of woodland, cafes and the Pets Corner (home to a variety of animals), there’s plenty to explore - and if you keep following the Ouseburn, you’ll reach the waterfall, a sight better than anything money could buy!
And all parts of the park - including Pets Corner - are free to enter!

The Great North Museum: Hancock
Whether you’re a history lover or not, the Great North Museum is a great visit, and it’s completely free to enter.
Located right next to campus, it’s packed with galleries and exhibitions ranging from ancient civilisations and natural history to cultural and scientific exhibits - there’s even a planetarium! With so much on offer, you can easily spend hours looking round the museum - but equally, a quick look around can be just as fun!
Why not pop in next time you’ve got a break between lectures?
Tynemouth

Just a short metro ride away, Tynemouth is one of my personal favourite day-out spots - with its stunning sea views, historical landmarks and coastal paths, there’s lots to do and explore here without breaking the bank.
Take a stroll along the beach, enjoy the fresh air, or visit the famous Sunday markets at the station! Tynemouth is a lively coastal town with lots to do and see - it’s easy to fill an afternoon exploring without spending!
Hatton Gallery

For a splash of art and creativity, Newcastle’s own Hatton Gallery is a must-visit - and it’s free to enter!
Located right on campus, the gallery showcases a range of historical and contemporary art as well as frequent exhibitions from renowned artists and students alike - check the Hatton Gallery website to see what exhibitions and workshops are coming up!
It’s the perfect spot to spend a quiet afternoon admiring exhibitions and experience Newcastle’s vibrant art scene completely free of charge.
Baltic Centre

If you’re into contemporary art, you can’t beat the Baltic Centre, and the main galleries are completely free!
Just across the water from the Quayside overlooking the Tyne, the Baltic Centre hosts an ever-changing array of contemporary art exhibitions from local and world-renowned artists. From expressive art to exhibitions focusing on history, marine life, photography, sculptures and more - there’s so much here and there’s always something to catch your eye.
For art-lovers and those who simply admire creativity, it’s one of the best places to spend a few hours without spending a penny.
Final thoughts
Filling out your free time and making the most of living in Newcastle whilst trying to balance the financial side of being a student can feel daunting, but hopefully with these ideas you’ll realise there’s plenty to do without worrying about money!
From scenic walks and historic sites to museums and art galleries, Newcastle is packed with ways for you to get out, relax, explore and get inspired for free!
