It’s officially time to say hello to February! From sparkling theatre shows to romantic Valentine’s Day ideas, here’s our pick of events that you just can’t miss…

Refreshers fair - 2nd February

Feel like you've missed out on joining a society and expanding your social circle since you started university? No worries, memberships are still open, and you can still get involved. At the fair, hosted in Venue, you'll get to see the societies in action, talk to the committees, pick up some promo, and even sign up.

Scottish Ballet's The Nutcracker - 2nd-5th February

This month, the Scottish Ballet is in town with a scrumptious performance of The Nutcracker at the Theatre Royal. Enjoy a story straight from the pages of a fairy tale, with deliciously lavish costumes and a music score that will transport you to a land of dreams.

Plus, if one sparkling theatrical production isn't enough, head over to the Tyne Theatre Opera House and catch the Russian State Opera's Madama Butterfly on the 27th.  

Sport for all - Various dates

Looking to get active this February? Try your hand at archery, squash, netball, benchball, indoor cricket, dodgeball, or table tennis, all this month at Newcastle University Sports Centre. Sessions are for everyone, so no prior experience is necessary.

Victoria Tunnels Tour - 8th February

Catch echoes of Ouseburn’s past in the Victoria Tunnels – a feat of Victorian engineering used to carry coal under the very foundations of Newcastle to the Quayside. Led by expert guides, you will learn the history of the tunnels from wagonways through to wartime hideouts. Rated as a top activity for things to do in Newcastle, don’t miss this private tour just for Newcastle University students!

Considering postgraduate study? Then come along to our PG Open Day for an insight into what your future in higher education could look like! With intriguing subject fairs, campus tours, and inspiring student cafes, this event is a must for those looking into further study.

We have some fantastic virtual talks coming up this month. Join our experts and guests for thought-provoking online lectures on the gripping history of the handshake with Ella Al-Shamahi, Neuroblastoma with Professor Deborah Tweddle, and a special LGBTQ+ Month lecture with E-J Scott.

CBK Adventures - Various dates

CBK Adventures, based at Whitley Bay, know all the best local spots, so let them show you around! Take a plunge into the invigorating cold waters of the North Sea at an Ice Dip Social or experience breath-taking views of the Tyne Bridge and Quayside by kayak!

Newcastle Castle Tour - 9th February

Join an exclusive tour of the historic Newcastle Castle. Led by expert guides, learn the story of how Newcastle began and the reason it got its name. Discover more about the castle’s gruesome history as a prison and explore the most commanding views across the city and River Tyne.

Alternatively, make it a date and soak up the magical atmosphere of Newcastle's Castle Keep with someone special this Valentine’s Day.

Hadrian’s Wall Day Trip - 13th February

Hadrian's Wall is steeped in history and is a great place to explore. Come along and make new friends while enjoying stunning views of Northumberland.

Leaving by minibus from the Students' Union and stopping at The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre, followed by a walk up to Steel Rigg and along Hadrian’s Wall to the famous Sycamore Gap. Plus, a chance to visit Housesteads Museum before returning to campus.

Valentine's Day - 14th February

Someone special to impress? Show your love with a gift of hand-decorated biscuits from NUSU’s Valentine's Biscuit Decorating event before whisking them away on one of these fabulous First Date Ideas.

If you’re all loved up, sweep your beloved off their feet with a meal at one of Newcastle’s most Romantic Restaurants.
