December is one of the most magical times to be in Newcastle, with the city full of festive lights, cosy activities, Christmas markets and exciting events both on and off campus. 

Whether you’re finishing up assignments, planning fun days out with friends, or staying in Newcastle over the winter break, there’s plenty to enjoy throughout the month.

From creative workshops and candlelit concerts to festive films and winter trails, here are some of the best events happening in December 2025. 

 

City-Wide Festive Events

✨ Enchanted City (11–14 December)

Transforming Newcastle into a glowing winter wonderland, Enchanted City is one of the most magical festive experiences of the year. Expect immersive light installations, photo-worthy displays and a cosy Christmas atmosphere throughout the evening. It’s the perfect chilled activity after a day of studying or Christmas shopping.

🎬 Festive Flix in Old Eldon Square (28 November–23 December)

Grab a hot chocolate and enjoy your favourite festive films outdoors in Old Eldon Square. With fairy lights and cosy seating, it’s one of the best low-cost ways to get into the Christmas mood. Perfect for a casual night out with friends before heading home for the holidays.

🛍️ Ouseburn Christmas Market (6–7 December)

This vibrant market is filled with handmade crafts, independent makers, vintage clothing and festive treats. It’s ideal for picking up unique, student-budget Christmas gifts. The creative atmosphere makes Ouseburn one of the best neighbourhoods to explore in winter.

🌿 Wreath-Making with Pansy’s Florist (8 December)

Join a festive workshop at Ouseburn Garden and make your own Christmas wreath using fresh winter foliage. It’s a fun and creative way to relax after deadlines. You’ll leave with a beautiful handmade decoration for your home or a thoughtful gift.

🍰 Home Alone & Afternoon Tea – Tyneside Cinema (21 December)

Enjoy a festive afternoon tea followed by a screening of the iconic Christmas film Home Alone. It’s a cosy and indulgent way to spend a winter afternoon with friends. The themed food and warm cinema atmosphere make it extra special.

🕯 Christmas by Candlelight at Newcastle Cathedral (12–13 December)

These candlelit concerts offer a stunning, peaceful setting for festive music. With multiple performances over the weekend, it’s a perfect escape from the December rush. The cathedral’s atmosphere makes this an unforgettable seasonal experience.

🎶 Christmas at The Glasshouse (throughout December)

The Glasshouse hosts a full programme of festive concerts, including orchestras, choirs and Christmas classics. Students can enjoy everything from traditional carols to cinematic Christmas music. It’s one of the best ways to experience live music during winter.

🌌 Northern Lights Trail in Leazes Park

Take a festive winter walk through Leazes Park and enjoy beautiful light displays under the evening sky. It’s a great way to get some fresh air and soak up seasonal atmosphere. Ideal for students staying in Newcastle over Christmas.

⛸️ Ice Skating at the Life Science Centre

Round off the year with an afternoon of ice skating at the Life Science Centre. Whether you’re a pro or a first-time skater, it’s guaranteed to be a fun and memorable way to spend a winter day. A perfect festive activity for students still in the city.

On-Campus Festive Activities & Student Events

🎼 Final-Year Interim Music Recitals (early December)

Support talented Newcastle University Music students as they perform a range of instruments and vocal pieces. The recitals run across multiple early-December dates, including a full-day session on 9 December. It’s a peaceful on-campus activity perfect for anyone who enjoys live music.

🎨 Chilled Out Christmas Crafts with Give It a Go (11 December)

Relax and unwind with a creative crafting session at the Students’ Union. Make decorations, ornaments or handmade gifts using all provided materials. It’s a great way to destress before the holiday break.

🎲 Board Game Social with Give It a Go (12 December)

Join a cosy evening of board games and friendly competition at the SU. This event brings students together for low-pressure fun during the busy season. It’s perfect if you want a relaxed night without spending much.
