Exam season’s finally over and with it the sun’s come out in all its glory - and if June’s anything like the last week of May, we’re in for a hot one!

Here’s some of the top events over the next month to start your summer off strong:


Newcastle University Discover Festival - 13 June

If you’re looking to spark your curiosity this summer, look no further than Newcastle’s free family-friendly interactive Discover Festival!

From 10:00 16:00 on Saturday 13 June, Newcastle’s campus will come together for a jam-packed day of inspiration and innovation.

Whether you’re an aspiring astronaut, curious about AI or if you and a family member just want to have a kick about, there’s something for everyone with activities, crafts, shows and events for all ages throughout the day.

This year will also see a special Ask a Scientist LIVE edition of the From Newcastle podcast, featuring a panel of experts ready to tackle any of the questions you can throw at them!

With fun to be had for kids and adults alike, it’s the perfect family day out to start off the summer.

Hatton Gallery

Located right on campus and free to enter, the Hatton Gallery is always worth a visit at any time of year, showcasing a range of modern and contemporary art.

This June, the Discover Festival returns to Hatton Gallery. Visit on Saturday 13 June for a day of drop-in art workshops of stamp and block printing, watercolour, and ink art as well as talks about printing and calligraphy.

Alongside its permanent collection and ongoing exhibitions, this month also sees the introduction of the Lines of Action by guest artist Jane Wilson, exploring the importance of the “line” in the creative process.

Jesmond Street Tidy - 13 June

Give some love back to the streets of Newcastle this June by participating in the Jesmond Street Tidy!

Organised by Keep Jesmond Clean, a group of Jesmond residents dedicated to keeping Jesmond tidy, the Jesmond Street Tidy is a frequent free-to-participate event open to all students. All equipment is provided and there’s even tea and biscuits available once the tidy is done!

With the next one taking place on 13 June, it’s the perfect chance to get out in the fresh air and make Newcastle a nicer place to live in for everyone.

Carnival at the Castle - 6 June-September

Starting on 6 June and running through the summer to September, the Carnival at the Castle is transforming the Newcastle Castle into a hub of historical fun and storytelling for all ages.

From immersive re-enactments to live performances, there’s plenty to see and do with centuries of celebration packed into one day out.

Hoppings Funfair - 19-28 June

From 19-28 of June, the Town Moor will be hosting the Hoppings Funfair!

Expect to find thrilling rides, family-friendly activities and a variety of quality food and refreshment stands - everything you need to a fun-filled day out in the sunshine.

And this year it falls on Father's Day weekend, so it could be the perfect treat!

Tynemouth Market – Every Saturday and Sunday

The Tynemouth Markets take place at Tynemouth station every Saturday and Sunday from 9:00AM-3:30PM, and with summer now well and truly in bloom, it's the perfect time to hop on the metro and spend a day by the coast!

Wander the markets, get yourself a sweet treat, and if you fancy, venture out the station and enjoy the sunshine on the beach!
