Student Elections,NUSU

Elections NUSU

This month, it's finally time to vote in the Student Elections 2021! Hosted every year by our fantastic Students' Union, this election ultimately decides who will represent our student body for the next academic year and every single student at Newcastle University has the opportunity to vote. With every vote made, 50p will also be donated to and split between three special charities; Student Minds, Mermaids and The Angelou Centre.

From the presidential vote right through to the voluntary liberation roles, you've got until midday on Thursday 4th March to choose your favourite. Though a very different occasion to previous years, this year's candidates are doing an excellent job at campaigning virtually so make sure to browse their manifestos before casting your vote. Once the votes are in, tune in on Friday 5th March at 7pm to meet and celebrate the new 2021-2022 officer team.

Made your decision yet? Vote for your favourite now.

Shaping Futures, NUSU

Shaping Futures-1

After the great success of last year's F.U.C.C (Future Under Climate Crisis) campaign, our Students' Union is back to continue their legacy of climate work with a new campaign, 'Shaping Futures'. Featuring as part of Enrichment Week from 1st-7th March, the week-long campaign is inspired by the UN's Sustainable Development Goals with each event in their programme relating to one of the 17 aims.

Alongside their objectives, green pledges and handy resources, the week includes a series of thought-provoking and engaging events featuring keynote speakers, student societies, NUSU officers and the University itself. From talks on how to take climate action and workshops on social responsibility through to more interactive sessions like recyclable arts and crafts and plastic-free cook-a-longs, tune in to show your commitment to the climate crisis and have tons of fun whilst doing it.

If climate action, environmental justice and sustainability are at the top of your agenda, discover more about 'Shaping Futures' here.

Science Careers Outside the Lab, Newcastle University Careers Service

Outside the Lab

When thinking about a career in science, many of us immediately think of a traditional lab-setting and fancy white lab coats. However, being a scientist can be much more than just working in a lab. This March, our Careers Service is dedicated to showing the variety of opportunities available to those considering a career in science. From 15th-18th, join us for a week of online panels from science professionals working in a range of organisations and career areas, including communications, publishing, recruitment, business development, intellectual property and much more.

Not only can you discover more about non-lab based careers but also chat with Newcastle University graduates and employers who are now using their scientific skills and knowledge in different areas and building contacts with key organisations employing science graduates. Make sure you also stay tuned for an exclusive, interactive session on the 17th with global healthcare and pharmaceutical employer, GSK.

Interested in a science career beyond the lab? Book your place here.

Live Music in King's Hall, Newcastle University

Kings Hal;

In normal circumstances, our Live in the King's Hall concerts, student performances and other recitals organised by the International Centre for Music Studies (ICMuS) would take place regularly in our wonderful Armstrong Building. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing pandemic these concerts and recitals, like many other events across the world, have had to pause until further notice.

However, safely within the present restrictions, we would like to welcome you to our virtual series of concerts instead, featuring a variety of talented musicians from a wide range of genres, instruments and time periods. All streamed via YouTube, tune into fantastic student recitals, attend live performances from folk ensemble HEISK and award-winning composer and pianist Adam Johnson or even listen along to the Early Music @ Newcastle podcast.

With a wide range of virtual sessions available throughout March and completely free and open to all, keep up to date with our upcoming concerts here.

Society Events, NUSU

NUSU

It wouldn't be an events programme without a mention of our wonderful student societies who are doing an excellent job at keeping our student community entertained during the pandemic. With over 160 societies to choose from, there are plenty of virtual activities available to fill your social calendar!

Why not join the Gilbert and Sullivan Society for their charity quiz on the 5th, celebrate International Women's Day 2021 with the Feminist and LGBTQ+ Societies on the 8th or even get moving with the fantastically fun Zumba Society on the 11th. Whatever sparks your interest this month, keep an eye on NUSU's events page for any upcoming society events so you don't miss out.

Don't see anything of interest? Why not create your own society! Find out how here.

Secrets of the Stars, Kielder Observatory

Observatory

Unfortunately, due to present Covid-19 restrictions, many of Northumberland's cultural venues, like Kielder Observatory, have had to close their doors until further notice. However, until we can return in person, the fantastic astronomers at the observatory have created a virtual series for us to enjoy from home.

Next in their programme is 'The Secret Lives of Stars' on 16th March which will uncover the mysteries of light in the night sky, explore the ways in which we view our universe and discover the extraordinary ways that ancient astronomers navigated and developed meaning behind what they saw in the heavens above us.

Featuring a virtual tour of our fascinating skies, a session in learning the constellations and even an exclusive live talk and Q&A, this virtual occasion is not to be missed. Secure your place here.

Give It A Go Socials, NUSU

Cocktails

As we enter a new month, many of us might be bored of baking banana bread, learning Tiktok dances or even making Zoom quizzes but don't fear! Give It A Go (GIAG) have plenty more social activities and virtual events for you and your friends to attend. You could try something for the very first time or tune into a virtual activity you know and love.

Beyond their fitness sessions, become a mixologist for one night only with their virtual cocktail and mocktail evening, get your creative juices flowing in their creative writing session or even bring your furry friend along to their wacky but wonderful pet social.

If you'd like to get out and about safely, the team have also created a variety of self-walking tours and even a scavenger quest which you can use to explore the city within Covid-19 restrictions. Here you can check out Newcastle's iconic landmarks, experience the beauty of the Quayside or even discover more about Newcastle's history and culture easily from the virtual resources provided.

These events are free and open to all students (whether you have a pet or not!) Check out GIAG's full programme of virtual events here.

Any events that we missed? Let us know via socialmedia@ncl.ac.uk.

Please be aware that the above events are subject to change in light of evolving Covid-19 restrictions. Our latest guidance, updates and FAQs can be found here.
