Another month is about to begin! Make the most of your March with all the fantastic events taking place, both within the University and across Newcastle! 

Great Market Caper BLOG

Great Market Caper, Grainger Market

Everyone in Newcastle knows that Grainger Market is treasure trove in the heart of the city. But did you know that Grainger Market is home to The Great Market Caper? The Great Market Caper is a night of food, drink, music and fun, with their next event taking place on Saturday 4 March from 6:30pm to 12:00am. Tickets are £10.00 (not including booking fee) and guarantee you a night to remember. 

 

Falcons Student Offer

Newcastle Falcons vs. London Irish, Kingston Park

On Sunday 5 March at Kingston Park, students can watch the Newcastle Falcons face off against the London Irish for as little as £5! For a day out that won’t put a dent in the bank account, make sure to check out the student tickets and drink deals taking place on the day of the match.

International Women’s Day 

It’s International Women’s Day on Wednesday 8 March, a day dedicated to uplifting the inspiring women in our lives and all the way across the globe. This IWD, there’s a huge selection of events taking place across the city – check out a few highlights below! 

‘Embracing Identity for Equity’ by The Enterprise Academy

The Enterprise Academy will be hosting a series of talks on Wednesday 1 March from 1:30pm – 5:00pm, taking place in the Newcastle Helix. Keynote Speakers from Radboud University, International Consultants for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise, and our very own Business School will be joined by a panel of experts for a discussion focused on inclusion and diversity in male-dominated industries. Spaces are limited – book yours soon! 

‘A History of Feminism’ by Dr Hannah Dawson 

On Thursday 9 March at 5:30pm, Dr Hannah Dawson from King’s College London will be hosting a lecture that will take attendees on a whistle-stop tour of the history of feminism. The lecture marks the paperback publication of The Penguin Book of Feminist Writing, which was edited by Hannah Dawson. The event will take place in the Curtis Auditorium of the Herschel Building and is free to attend! Spaces are available to book from 10:00am on Thursday 2 March. 

‘This Girl Can’ 5K Run / Walk / Jog 

At 6:00pm on Wednesday 8 March at Exhibition Park, Newcastle City Council is hosting a parkrun event for International Women’s Day! Fancy dress isn’t required, but it is encouraged. If exercise makes you feel like your best self, why not celebrate IWD alongside other women in a comfortable, joyful environment? The run is free, booking is required! 

‘Revolting Women’ by Women’s Banner Group and LGBT Northern Social Group 

On Saturday 11 March at Brinkburn Street Brewery, local organisations are working together to host an event that puts the spotlight onto the grass roots activism done by women to advance equality.  The event will include talks as well as live music later in the evening and promotes an atmosphere of inclusion, education and joy. More information can be found online. 

 

Baltic BLOG

Holi Festival of Colours, hosted by the Baltic and GemArts 

The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art has partnered with GemArts to bring the celebration of Holi, the festival of colour, to Newcastle. On Saturday 11 March 12pm – 4pm at the Baltic, you can join in with the celebration of Holi by learning more about the music, food, culture and traditions associated with the festival, cultivating in a colour throwing at 3pm. The event is entirely free, but booking is required for a place in the colour-throwing finale!

NCL In Action: Launch Day, Newcastle Helix

NCL in Action is a programme that aims to bring Newcastle’s global community together to share knowledge about the might of a multi-generational society, grow networks and develop career prospects. 

On Saturday 11 March at the Newcastle Helix, a range of events will take place discussing leading researching into the ageing process in relation to physical health, mental health and more. Registrations are open now.

Creative Careers Week 

Between Monday 27 February – Friday 3 March, Newcastle University celebrates and highlights Creative Careers through a range of workshops, panel events and talks! If you’re interested in pursuing a career in the creative industries, make sure to check out all the information available about the sessions taking place. The events span across a diverse selection of creative careers and sessions will be delivered by experts in their fields, including a magazine writing workshop delivered by our very own Editor-in-Chief of The Courier! Make sure to see what events could benefit you and your future and book your space ASAP. 

Science Careers Outside the Lab 

On Thursday 16 March in The Boiler House, the Science Careers Outside the Lab event will take place for those interested in pursuing a career that puts their knowledge of science to use, away from a traditional lab-based setting. Attendees will be able to mix with graduates and employers, boosting their networking skills and learning more about paths they could take in the future. Registration is necessary and the event is open to all current students, recent graduates and early career researchers. 

Newcastle University Graduate Recruitment Fair 

On Monday 6 March at the Hadrian Building, Newcastle University will be hosting their Graduate Recruitment Fair. Local and national employers from a huge range of sectors will be attending in the hopes of filling positions for 2023  - their next successful candidate could be you! Those wishing to attend should register their place as soon as possible.

University Mental Health Day

Mental health is of key importance to everyone, especially students. On Thursday 9 March, universities across the UK celebrate University Mental Health Day – this day aims to raise awareness of the issues students’ face and ensure nobody has to go through mental heath struggles alone. To support students, Newcastle University is putting on lots of events to improve mental health and you can book free tickets now!

Sustainability Week at Newcastle University

Sustainability Week runs between Monday 6 March – Friday 10 March. The full schedule will be released soon and will centre on increasing awareness of environmental issues, at a large-scale and individual level.
