March is the perfect time to be in Newcastle, as the city begins to welcome longer days and lighter evenings with the first signs of spring.

From surfing to food markets, there is something in every corner of the city. March offers plenty of opportunities for you to try something new, check out the events below.

Surf Lessons - off campus - 11 March

Give it a Go are offering a session for you to ride the waves and have some fun, this is perfect for beginners, no experience is needed!

For just £8 you will have access to all the equipment needed and have two hours of instruction from the qualified surf instructors at Longsands Surf School.

Learn to Lino Print, Tyne Theatre and Opera House - 12 March

This March you can get involved in a hands-on introduction to lino printing. The session guides you through the basics of designing, craving and printing your own linocut artwork whilst being in a relaxed and supportive environment. A perfect event for beginners!

All material will be provided, if you are hoping to try something new, unwind with a fun activity and embrace the start of spring with creativity, then this activity is ideal for you to try.

Tickets are £18 and can be booked on the Tyne Theatre and Opera House website.

 

Social Tennis, Leazes Park - 14 March

Join Newcastle University Tennis Club as they welcome beginners to come and hit some balls in the court in the lovely Leazes Park.

Rackets and balls are provided for everyone, but make sure you bring a drink and some layers to wear and have some fun.

This event is free to attend, book your space.

Yoga, History Room Union Level 1 - 17 March

Unwind and energise with a yoga session in the Student's Union. The class delivered by Freda can teach you dynamic movements, core strengthening classes and slow warmups.

The yoga classes aim to leave you feeling mindful and positive, a great opportunity to take part in relaxing activity and meet new people.

This session is open to all, wear comfortable clothing and bring some water too. Reserve your space for £3 through the Students' Union's Website.

 

Nintendo Switch Social, Students' Union - 18 March

Take a break from your studies and join this fun gaming social! Meet fellow students and show off your skills through playing Nintendo games.

From Mario Party, Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart and 1-2-Switch, racing, battling or trying mini-games there is something for everyone to enjoy!

There is no need to book for this event, you can just show up! The activity is happening in the Kate Adie Room, Level 1 of the Students' Union Building.

 

Voice and Piano Lunchtime Concerts, King's Hall, Armstrong Building - 19 March

Spend your lunchtimes enjoying a free concert in King's Hall, Armstrong Building with Andri Björn Róbertsson and Alison Frances Gill leading a performance of Tyneside and North-East songs mixed with folk songs and art songs from Andri's native Iceland.

The concert starts at 13.15 and lasts around 45 minutes, it is free to attend on a first come first served basis, so make sure you are there on time to get a seat!

Lean a Language (Portuguese) - 19 March

Curious to try a new language? Join the relaxed taster session for beginners to explore Portuguese basic sounds, phrases and culture of a new language with no pressure.

It is a fun way to try something new, meet other curious leaners and see if you would like to continue your language journey.

Jesmond Food Market, Armstrong Bridge - 21 March

Take a stroll down to Armstrong Bridge in Jesmond and visit the Jesmond Food Market. The market is open from 10.00 - 15.00 and is only on the first and third Saturday of each month.

With around 30 stalls offering a range of options from bread, fresh produce, meats, cheese and sweet treats not only is there something for everyone but it showcases the region's finest producers.

The perfect way to explore more of Jesmond and support local businesses. You might just find your new favourite food!

HAPPY!, Newcastle University Hatton Gallery exhibition - All Month

Visit Newcastle University's Hatton Gallery anytime through March to view the vibrant HAPPY! exhibition.

This exhibition is created in partnership with Jerwood Collection and the gallery's young people's group L-INK. Showcasing how artists develop their practice through education, experience and experimentation.

The exhibition can be accessed throughout the whole of March, Monday - Saturday between 10.00 and 17.00.
