Lumiere Light Festival
Experience a night like no other at the annual 'Lumiere' Light Festival taking place 16-19 November. Led by world-renowned artists Ai Weiwei and Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, this festival features over 40 interactive and visual light installations across the city centre of Durham. Historic buildings such as the cathedral and marketplace will be lit up with light and art projections. Trains run frequently from Newcastle train station (under £10 for a return) and takes less than 30 minutes. The event is free to the public between 7:30 – 11 pm. Free RSPB Nature Trip
Fancy getting away from the bustle of the city? Join the free wildlife spotting day trip to the RSPB’s Saltholme coastal nature reserve organised by the Students' Union. Explore diverse walking trails through this wildlife-rich area with views of outstanding beauty, a range of wildlife spotting as well as a scenic café offering coastal views. The trip takes place Sunday, November 19, 11:00 - 5:00 pm. Tickets are free but limited and can be found on the Students' Union website.
Newcastle Book Festival 2023
Sign up and catch some literature-based events at the 2023 ‘Books on The Tyne, Newcastle Book Festival’. Taking place 18 - 25 November, join over 20 different events ranging from book readings, launches and discussions. Check out the website to find a programme of sessions to feast your appetite for fiction, non-fiction, performance and spoken word. There's plenty to choose from. Events can be booked online and take place in both the City Library and the ‘Lit & Phil Library' with individual event tickets ranging from free to £15.
The Christmas Night Market
Celebrate the arrival of the Christmas season on November 23 for the Newcastle Christmas night market. With over 80 independent, local traders selling winter crafts, jewellery, artwork and more. Not to forget a range of street food vendors, bars, and live music. Look at gifts for friends and family or grab a bite to eat. It is open 5:30-10:30 pm at the Boiler Shop (behind the train station) and student tickets are available for £3.25. See the website for more details.
