Welcome Programme, NUSU

If you are just beginning your journey with us, our Welcome Schedule will certainly keep you busy, help you settle into your new home and social bubble and have loads of fun while doing it. Until 11th October, dive into both day-time and night-time activities organised safely within present Covid-19 restrictions by our Students' Union. From unmissable virtual events with Bongo’s Bingo featuring artists like Clean Bandit and Joey Corry to hilarious stand-up comedy specials right here on campus, our induction programme will say, “Welcome to Newcastle” like no other.

 

Virtual INSIGHTS Lectures, Newcastle University

Newcastle University’s much-loved virtual INSIGHTS lectures return for autumn with a series of thought-provoking and fascinating discussions. From 5:30pm every Thursday, tune in to lectures covering a wide range of disciplines with experts from Newcastle University and beyond. With special features for World Mental Health Day, Black History Month and Oral History Month, sessions are free to join and even save time at the end for a live and exclusive Q&A with the speaker.

Jesmond Beach Box

A firm favourite for 2020 is Jesmond’s newest and only beach location, Beach Box. Socially distanced and open every day, Beach Box boasts an exciting and busy schedule with quizzes, live music, bingo, sports and an open mic night every single week! A student’s paradise, you can even find local food vendors like the delicious Dosa Kitchen and Grainger Market favourite, Acropolis. Don’t forget your flip-flops!

 

 Careers Events, Newcastle University Careers Service

Are you beginning to ponder life after graduation? Maybe you need some tips on CV writing and assessment centres or maybe you just want some general advice and direction? Our Careers Service’s frequent events can help. From virtual webinars, Q&As, fairs and talks with professional experts and qualified advisors, their useful schedule will ensure you are informed, organised and prepared for whatever path your future may hold.

If you’re interested in entrepreneurship make sure to also catch the various START UP events, which encourage graduates to work independently with the dedicated support of our Careers Service.

 

 Virtual Tours, Great North Museum

Our friends over at the Great North Museum (GNM) have finally re-opened their doors and are ready to transport you to the Ice Age, Ancient Iraq and many more forgotten worlds. Partnering up with digital experts, Pedestal VR, the museum brings you six impressive and immersive digital tours of our beloved campus museum where you can navigate, explore and learn completely virtually.

The museum is currently open and welcoming back visitors whilst complying to present Covid-19 restrictions. However, these virtual tours ensure our love for GNM will continue in such unprecedented times. Plan your visit here.

 

 Alumni Day of Action, Newcastle University Advancement

Unite with your international Alumni community for one day only with our Alumni Day of Action on October 10th. Collaborate, network and share your experiences with alumni from a variety of professions, expertise and countries. Whilst we may not be able to meet face-to-face in 2020, our re-imagined annual reunion will be an interactive digital event with plenty of opportunities to get involved.

Society Events, NUSU

As our many societies return for the new academic year, most will begin to entertain their members with weekly socials, meetings and events. Whether you are new to our Newcastle University community or a returning student this autumn, societies are something everyone can get involved in. From sports and subject-based societies to political, religion and foodie groups, our Students' Union boasts over 160 societies and welcomes new ideas every single year.

This October, why not hang-out on Zoom with our LGBTQ+ Society or tune in to virtual talks with real-world experts with our GP Society. For a small annual fee, societies won't just keep you entertained but also help you find friends for life.

 

commUNITY Life, ResLife

After a full-filled schedule in September, commUNITY Life returns in October to ensure where-ever you are in our city, you can remain connected with your university community. Specifically for new undergraduate or postgraduate taught student not living in the University student accommodation, commUNITY offers an inclusive activities schedule from virtual socials like quizzes, movie nights and cultural events to useful daily drop-in sessions and life-skills workshops. All organised through Zoom, you won't miss a thing - even if you're self-isolating!

The Confucius Institute, Newcastle University

Always been interested in learning the Chinese language? Well now’s your chance with Newcastle University’s Confucius Institute's incoming autumn timetable. For 10 weeks only from October 12th, discover Mandarin in elementary, intermediate or advanced levels with additional HSK preparation and Experience Chinese classes. Whether you’re an expert or a complete beginner, this interactive experience will not only expand your knowledge of Chinese culture and communication but add an invaluable asset to your CV.

Meditation Sessions, Mindfulness Meditation Hub

It’s a brand new term with brand new challenges, surroundings and agenda so prioritising yourself and your mental wellbeing is crucial throughout October. To help, Mindfulness Meditation Hub are hosting virtual meditation sessions every Wednesday and Saturday morning for all effort levels to ensure you are remaining balanced, focused and ready for the month ahead.
