This event is a great opportunity to meet employers and explore different roles. But, with so many employers to speak to, it can be easy to feel unsure about where to start. Here are some tips to help you feel confident!
1. Do your Employer research (Dig deeper)
Before the day, take some time to look into the employers you're most interested in, what they do, who their clients are, and what roles they're currently recruiting for. Arriving with even a little context shows genuine interest and helps you ask better questions once you're there.
2. Make sure your LinkedIn is up to date
Many recruiters will look you up during or after a conversation, so it's worth giving your profile a quick refresh beforehand: a current photo, an accurate course title, and a filled-out "About" section all help you make a good first impression.
3. Say hello to everyone
It's natural to gravitate towards the most recognisable names, but some of the best opportunities come from stands with shorter queues. Smaller or less well-known employers often have brilliant part-time roles, placements, or graduate opportunities that are well worth exploring.
3. Prepare thoughtful questions
Try to move beyond questions you could easily answer yourself through research. Asking about what a typical week in the role looks like, what they value in new starters, or how the industry is changing shows genuine curiosity, and helps you stand out for the right reasons.
5. Follow up with recruiters afterwards
A short, sincere message on LinkedIn the next day, mentioning something specific from your conversation, goes a long way. Recruiters speak with a huge number of students on the day, so a thoughtful follow-up is often what keeps you memorable.
6. Practise a short introduction
You'll likely be asked to talk about yourself more than once, so it's worth having a brief, natural answer ready: your course, your interests, and the kind of role you're looking for. A little practice beforehand helps it come across naturally on the day.
