Here at the Careers Service we know job interviews whether they're for a placement, internship or graduate role can seem daunting. Below you’ll find some top tips to smash your next interview with ease!

1. Do your research

Make sure you do some research on the company and who you will be talking to before attending the interview. This is a great way to impress the interviewer as it shows that you're genuinely interested in the job and also means you're better placed to ask any relevant questions.

2. Appearance

Come to your interview dressed appropriately. Pick an outfit that conveys professionalism and when in doubt, opt for business casual. Even if your interview is online make sure you're dressed smartly – impressions count!

3. Arrive on time

It’s crucial you arrive on time for your interview. Being punctual shows that you value the interviewers time and are serious about the role. If you're running behind on the day, give the interviewer or company a call to let them know you're on your way.

4. Attendance

If you have been offered an interview do let the employer know if you're no longer able to attend. The interviewer will have put aside time to meet you so it is polite to get in touch if you no longer wish to proceed with the interview.

5. Turn your camera on

If your interview is online be sure to turn your camera on so the interviewer can see you!

6. Commitment

Make sure that you express at the interview if you have any other responsibilities, such as specific lecture times or another job, that may hinder your commitment to the role. This ensures the interviewer knows when you would be able to work.

7. Be honest about your skills

Finally, it’s important to be honest about your skills. Sell yourself, but also be clear about where you might need support and any role requirements you do not have. The interviewer will value this honesty and it also means they can ensure you're the right fit for the role.
