I moved to Newcastle four years ago, a new city that, somewhere along the way, became a second home. I am excited for what is to come next, but it is bittersweet knowing what I am leaving behind in this city.
One of my favourite things about living in Newcastle for the last four years definitely has to be the people in this city.
Geordies not only talk to you, but they welcome you to the city. They are some of the friendliest people I have met.
This was was comforting for me when moving somewhere new as this reminded me of being at home.
From strangers helping me work out how to use the Metro, to taxi drivers asking about my day, to the warmth of those in shops and cafes here. The Geordie spirit is amazing it definitely made the city feel more familiar and welcoming.
Over the years, I have discovered many hidden corners of Newcastle as I tried to explore the city as much as I could.
Ouseburn is one of my favourite places to go to in Newcastle, with its street art, cute bars, restaurants and even a little farm it is the perfect spot for a day out with friends.
Another favourite is Jesmond Dene. This is definitely a student favourite; the views and walks are lovely; it is great to go there on a sunny day.
Newcastle has so many amazing food spots and I love it!
Grainger Market was one of my favourite places to visit in all four years, from getting my weekly food shop there to trying out the different food vendors they have.
There really is something for everyone in Grainger Market, I also loved it as I didn’t have anything like this in my hometown, so I have been going as much as I could!
Newcastle has many independent restaurants, too. My favourites I have found over the years are Unos Quayside for Italian, Kafeneon for Greek food, I Scream for Pizza for pizza slices, but my housemates and I are always up for trying new spots when we can!
Whilst night outs are not for everyone and that’s okay, something I have loved is Newcastle’s nightlife, the city is known for a good night out.
From trying all new bars and clubs in first year to having our favourites at the end of four years, Newcastle’s nightlife has been a big part of my university experience.
These nights created some funny memories, but many were also made not on a night out for those who aren’t into clubbing or drinking!
The city has many amazing views and sights to see!
The Quayside is one of my favourite spots to go to, I love a walk or run down there or even sitting with my kindle in the sun taking it all in.
There are so many historical sites to see in the city, this is especially exciting when you first move here, and you get to explore the area properly.
From Monument and Grey Street to the castle and city walls, there is a constant reminder of the city's history.
I love that Newcastle is the perfect size for a city!
It’s big enough to explore, but small enough that it all becomes familiar to you quickly.
You’ll quickly find your favourite spots too, as the city has so much to offer!
I have loved living in Newcastle throughout my time at university, and I will truly miss the city, the people, and everything these few years given me.
Four years ago, Newcastle was somewhere completely new and unfamiliar. Now it’s a place filled with memories, friendships, and favourite spots that feel like home.
