A recent study of 1,000 UK undergraduates found that 27% of students have a business or want to start one soon, despite few originally setting out to be their own boss. Find out how we can support you

It also found that most undergraduates have been motivated to start up because of a hobby or interest rather than to make a profit and almost half want to continue growing their ‘side hustle’ after graduation.

This research was commissioned by Santander Universities UK to support their Emerging Entrepreneurs programme, where Newcastle University graduate James Cobbledick recently pitched Bind CRM at the semi-finals, after being supported by START UP to get there.

Why does my side hustle matter?

Whether you realise it or not, taking on your own business or freelance projects whilst studying is doing a lot more for you than simply bringing in some extra cash.

Not only can it enrich your overall student experience, you’re developing skills in ownership, accountability and resilience as you learn to navigate the inevitable highs and lows of working for yourself, learning that what you may sometimes perceive as failure is actually opportunity and experience in disguise.
