With lockdown restrictions in force across Newcastle, it’s vitally important that we all follow safety measures to help minimise the risk of spreading COVID-19. To protect yourself and others while on campus or in the city, please make sure you adhere to safety guidance and do not meet with people outside of your own household or support bubble.

However, that doesn’t mean you have to stay indoors the whole time! As long as we all follow these rules, there are plenty of places where you and your household can safely social distance out and about in Newcastle.

Town Moor

First on the list is Town Moor. This spot is idyllic for picnics with your housemates. Seeing as this piece of common land is larger than New York’s Central Park, it’s easy to spread out while keeping your distance. Pack a snack, speakers, and a good book for a day of relaxing under the sun.

 Leazes Parkleazes-1

Right by the University, Leazes Park is perfect for a stroll. With large and open pathways, it’s easy to get around without bumping into anyone. Most people have only seen the forefront but as you walk into this park, you’ll find that it actually goes much further than what the eye first reveals.

 Quayside

The Quayside is undoubtedly one of Newcastle’s most Instagramable hotspots. Take in impressive views of Sage Gateshead and the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art on a riverside stroll by day. Or visit at night when the bridges are illuminated, bringing the area alive with sparkling lights.

With wide pathways stretching the length of the Quayside you’ll find plenty of space to maintain social distancing, whilst lining up the perfect shot to make all your friends back home jealous.

 Jesmond Dene

Jesmond Dene is best known for the waterfall located at the end of the trail. However, on this fairytale of a walk, you may notice that there isn’t a lot of space on the path. While it’s not impossible to create distance from others, it can present an unnecessarily stressful occasion. Instead, I recommend laying out a blanket by the bridge. When walking to the Dene, you’ll see a large bridge which overlooks the park. After making your way down to the cafes, you’ll see various spots with little to no people. Grab a blanket and lay down for a restful afternoon under the whisper of the trees.

 Exhibition Park

Just like this list started with a park, it’ll end with one too! Exhibition Park lies right between the University and the outlying area of Jesmond. Walking through, you’ll find a skate park, tennis courts, and of course, lots of open space. This is the perfect spot for anyone who doesn’t want to leave the city.

If you’re tired of the classic picnic, try picking up a project that can be done outdoors! From outlining your next business plan to painting a masterpiece, there are plenty of activities that can be done from a distance while relaxing in the open air surrounded by nature.

And there you have it, our top five places where you can comfortably social distance in Newcastle. Remember, always wear a mask and take as many safety precautions as possible. That said, enjoy yourself and have a wonderful time in the Toon!
