Cosy spots on campus when it's cold ❄️

When winter hits Newcastle, staying warm becomes just as important as staying productive.

Luckily, Newcastle University has plenty of cosy, comfortable spaces where you can escape the cold, get some work done, or simply unwind between lectures. Here are some of my favourite go-to spots on campus during the colder months.

Marjorie Robinson Library

If you’re looking for a calm but modern study space, Marjorie Robinson Library is perfect. With spacious desks, comfortable seating, and a quiet atmosphere, it’s ideal for focused study sessions. The warm lighting and contemporary design make it especially inviting when it’s freezing outside.

King's Gate, Level 1

King’s Gate is one of the most aesthetic and cosy buildings on campus. With natural light streaming through large glass windows, soft seating areas, and nearby cafés, it’s a great spot for light studying, group catch-ups, or even just warming up with a coffee between lectures.

Henry Daysh Building

This building is a hidden gem. The seating areas feel relaxed and homely, making it perfect if you want a quieter, less intense study environment. It’s especially nice for reading, group discussions, or casual revision on cold afternoons.

Old Library Building

The Old Library Building is a lifesaver during winter especially because it’s open 24/7. It’s not a silent study space, which makes it ideal for group work, late-night revision, or casual studying without the pressure of complete quiet. With plenty of desks and a warm, comfortable environment, it’s a great option when you need flexibility and somewhere reliable to study at any time of day (or night).

Language Resource Centre

This space is not only beautiful but incredibly cosy. With its classic wooden interiors, high ceilings, and peaceful atmosphere, the Language Resource Centre feels almost like studying in a historic library.

It’s one of the best spots for long study sessions during cold days.

Philip Robinson Library

A campus favourite for a reason. From silent study pods to comfortable booths and open desk areas, Philip Robinson Library has something for everyone. It’s warm, spacious, and ideal whether you’re pulling a long study day or just popping in to escape the cold.

NUBS Bloomberg Room (Perfect for Finance Students)

The Bloomberg Room at Newcastle University Business School is especially ideal for finance, economics, and accounting students. The space is warm, quiet, and designed for focused work, making it perfect for analysing data, working on finance coursework, or preparing for assessments. With access to Bloomberg terminals and a professional study environment, it’s a great place to feel productive and stay motivated especially during cold winter days when you don’t want to move far from campus.

Urban Sciences Building

The Urban Sciences Building is one of the best places on campus to escape the cold while still feeling motivated and inspired. With its wooden interiors, open staircases, and large glass windows, the building feels warm, calm, and welcoming even on the greyest winter days.

The mix of quiet seating areas and open spaces makes it ideal for both solo study and light group work.

Whether you’re revising between lectures, working on coursework, or just looking for a comfortable place to sit with your laptop, this building offers plenty of cosy corners without feeling overcrowded. The natural light and modern design also make long study sessions feel much more manageable during winter.

❄️ Final Thoughts

Winter on campus doesn’t have to mean struggling in the cold. Whether you prefer modern study spaces, classic libraries, or cosy corners with comfy seating, Newcastle University has plenty of spots to keep you warm, productive, and motivated all season long.

Tip: Grab a hot drink, bring a cosy jumper, and make the most of these spaces; winter studying, but make it comfy
