What does Brexit mean for me?

By Newcastle University

The UK left the European Union on 31st January 2020, and we want to let you know how this might affect you.

When will the transitional period end?

When leaving the EU, the UK entered into a transitional period to allow negotiations to take place, and this will end on 31st December 2020.

What does this mean for me?

After the transitional period ends, so will freedom of movement. If you’re an EU or international student, you strongly advise that you take prompt action to secure your status in the UK.

What do I need to do?

If you are an EU, non EU EEA or Swiss national and you have entered the UK before the end of the transitional period, the EU settlement scheme will remain open until 30th June 2021. If your application is successful, you’ll either receive settled or pre-settled status, which means you’ll be able to work and study in the UK. If you’ve not yet applied to the scheme but are thinking of doing so, we advise that you follow the guidance from UKCISA.

If you are an EU, non EU EEA, or Swiss national and you enter the UK after 31st December 2020, you’ll be subject to immigration control, unless you’ve already been granted settled or pre-settled status. This means that new students will have to apply for leave to enter under the Student Route, which requires sponsorship from the University.
